Holly Pester is a poet and writer. For Yarmonics Holly presented a new text based work consisting of fictional domestic narratives informed by recent census data. Reflecting on the pandemic and the restrictions on travel, the performance explores the ideas of home and the household.

Based north of Glasgow, we were delighted that Sarah Kenchington was able to bring her elaborate and constantly evolving semi-mechanical orchestra to Great Yarmouth. Made from strictly human powered, mechanically assisted, acoustic instruments, this orchestra is a rare and special spectacle.

Long term associate artist and collaborator, David Ross, approached us with the idea of creating a series of workshops based on the Christian Wolff piece 'Stone' (which Ross had successfully produced for Eastern Ears first birthday celebration). The project culminated in a participatory performance incorporating objects found from in and around Great Yarmouth.

Artists and musicians Conny Prantera and Alice Colley, working together as part of the ongoing collective The SeeR, brought their work in progress performance FEVER FEVER FEVER to the Hippodrome, consisting of hypnotic light and projection, alongside live and prepared sound.

Michael Page makes odd synthesisers. A common thread in his work is designing tactile interfaces to allow sensitive gestural interaction with the brittle boolean logic of audio electronics. Consciously employing the contradictions and tensions between these hard / soft systems to create cybernetic post-human machine noise.

Tazelaar’s performance in the grandiose Church of St Nicholas is the culmination of a project working with poet, Ruthie Collins. The pair visited Breydon Water earlier in 2021 to discuss their relationship with the place, which in turn informed new compositions, a podcast and this beautiful and sensitive performance.

Opening the 2022 festival, Tracey Musgrove is a Gong Practitioner and Sound Healer, having trained with the College of Sound Healing with one of the leading Gong Trainers in the UK, Sheila Whittacker. Tracey provides bespoke sound events across the region.

During a residency at Primeyarc in 2020 photographer, Jason Evans instigated a spontaneous improvisation with participants from the Herring House Trust. Using an expansive collection of ceramics from ‘Pot Rescue’ the group used simple directions to create evolving percussive patterns and textures. The group met again in 2021 for this performance and invited the audience to participate.

On the night of 21st October 1904, out in the Dogger Bank area of the North Sea, Russian warships mistook a fleet of British fishing trawlers for enemy Japanese warships, and opened fire. One of the fishermen killed that night was George Henry Smith, great-grandfather of Gareth Smith, the lyricist & artist behind Vanishing. ‘55°N, 5°E’ reawakens this history, reimagined here for YARMONICS.

A Japanese-Korean working with installation, performance and composition, residing in Huddersfield, UK. 

Her works sculpt domestic appliances and scrap wastes with invisible energy, especially interested in heat, magnetism and gravity, into kinetic contraptions. her works are site-specific, created here for Primeyarc; an ex-department store in the heart of Market Gates shopping centre.

Phil Minton comes from Torquay in the UK. He played trumpet and sang with the Mike Westbrook Band in the early 60s- then in dance and rock bands in Europe for the later part of the decade. The Feral Choir project is a series of vocal workshops with non-professionals, leading up to performances. Here Minton worked with the festival chorus (or Yarkestra) for an afternoon before heading to the underpass...

Alongside a performance with the duo Trance Map (with electronics improviser, Matthew Wright), we were delighted that Evan Parker was able to tackle the open space of the jetty. Often preferring indoor or more resonant spaces, this performance drew the audience toward Parker, in an attempt to shelter the sound from being carried by the sea breeze.

Performing at the now traditional midday slot at the Jetty, Charlotte Keeffe is one of Britain's most prominent improvising trumpeter/flugelhorn players.  Charlotte Keeffe’s passion for free improvisation, jazz and experimental music-making sees her performing regularly as a soloist and leading a variety of different ensembles, including her own Quartet.

A woman with a highly impressive array of talents and skills, and a dynamic music creative with experimental albums and tracks/remixes on Come Play With Me, Kynant Records, OTONO, Reel Long Overdub under her belt, NikNak regularly redefines and expands upon her role as a ground-breaking multidisciplinary artist.

Baritone saxophone improviser Colin Webster is known for working from extreme sonic palettes  – from minimal to maximal, constantly pushing boundaries. Here Webster used the resonant properties of the Sunken Garden, transporting tones and textures throughout the space.

Alex Ward is a composer, improviser, and performing musician. His primary instruments are clarinet and guitar, and he has also performed in public and on recordings on alto sax, piano/keyboards, bass guitar, and as a vocalist. In 2022 Alex continued the traditional pairing of wind instruments and the Sunken Garden.

Sophie Marritt is a Norwich based artist working with sound, video and painting. For Yarmonics 2019 Marritt created the immersive installation ‘Submarine’. Composed of a selection of recordings - both processed and in their raw form - from various sources of water in and around Great Yarmouth, listened to in the sleeping quarters of historic ship, the Lydia Eva.

We invited experimental vocalist and composer, Elaine Mitchener, to create a work that would both cut through and compliment the rumbling and sometimes cacophonous Market Gates car park, where the work was installed. Michener adapted an existing composition to create ‘IN DARKNESS’, which momentarily turned a liminal space into a space for focused listening and stillness.

Supported By Norwich Music hub, synthesiser maker and electronics polymath, Michael Page worked with students from Caister Academy to design and make the GYArp! synthesiser, focusing on the interface. The instrument is controlled by capacitive touch and intuitive interaction. The ensemble of Michael and two groups of students performed two improvisations using their GYArp!s.

Geo:Flux is a new audio/visual work from Flux:Intermedia’s Bill Vine and Liam Roberts. The sound is made up of raw and manipulated field recordings from different sites around Norfolk, whilst the visuals explore live video synthesis and experiments with real-time glitches. Here the duo perform Geo:Flux for the first time.

hymn are a group exploring spacious improvisations informed by simple composed material. With a rotating line up, this performance included Chris Dowding’s breathy trumpet playing and looping, Sylvia Halletts playing bicycle wheel, saw and electronics, and electronics improviser David Ross on modular synthesiser.

Abbas Zahedi’s interdisciplinary practice blends contemporary philosophy, poetics, and social dynamics with performance, sound, sculpture, and moving-image. For Yarmonics Abbas created a new sound piece in the form of a group meditation.

Based in Colchester, CLIP is a group dedicated to supporting young people’s journeys into experimental music-making. We are proud to have struck a lasting relationship with the group, which started with a thrilling and brave version of Terry Riley’s ‘In C’, performed in the sea.
